I’d like to extend congratulations to the 2008-2009 Action Chapter Board
of Directors that were installed at our July meeting at Errol Estates. Also
thanks to Linda Adams for her introduction and roast of me and for
installing the new board. A special congratulation goes out to Judy Leiby for
receiving the President’s Award from Jennifer for her service to the chapter over
these past years. The chapter is in pretty good shape and Judy makes sure of
that by her diligence and hard work as our secretary/treasurer. We can see evidence
of her skills in our chapter’s organization and in our financial books. I
feel very lucky to be able to serve for this next year with such a fine group of
industry professionals.

We have 16 people that have volunteered to serve on our board for this
coming year, and with what is going on in our industries and what we have
planned as a chapter, it is going to take that many people to make it work. We
have the Batson Luncheon to honor Tim Landers on August 19th with special
guest speaker Senator Mel Martinez. We also have a family fun night of bowling
planned for August, our annual Casino Night will be held in November, our
Christmas party will be held at Leu Gardens on December 16th, and we are
already planning the spring plant sale. Keep your calendars open for these
events and we will keep you informed as things get closer and details get
worked out.

Aside from all this fun, we still have businesses to run. We need your input
as to how we should address new challenges, ordinances and restrictions that
are being considered by our elected and appointed representatives. For instance,
the water management districts and Orange County are looking to pass more
restrictive water ordinances and a new landscape ordinance. These could affect
how much water you are allowed to use in your greenhouse, around your office
building or in the landscape. The landscape ordinance may restrict what you are
allowed to plant around your home, which is going to affect what the growers
can grow and sell. We need to make sure these regulators hear our voice so they
know what we need to continue to grow our businesses and at the same time protect
the environment and our natural resources. We are still the “green industry.”

Keep in touch with your board and let us know what you think and
need. The more input we have, the better we are going to be able to
serve your needs and the needs of the industry. Suggestions for topics or
locations for chapter meetings, attending a commission meeting,
sending an e-mail to one of your representatives will all help our cause.

By getting involved and being vocal we show the strength of our industry.
Let us know what we can do for you and our board will work as hard as
we can this year to represent all your different business needs. I’m looking
forward to the next year!
