TPIE Short Course

The TPIE Short Course is held in conjunction with FNGLA's Tropical Plant Industry Exhibition (TPIE) each January. TPIE's Short Course links industry professionals seeking top-quality educational programming with the programs they need to increase their knowledge. Attendees gain insight on the latest and greatest happenings in each specific area of the industry.

TPIE's Short Course features a separate option to attend a nursery tour on the Wednesday prior to the show.  

Who Should Attend?

Retail Garden Center Professionals, Interiorscapers, and Interiorscape Technicians.

Continuing Education Units:

  • FNGLA Certified Horticulture Professional (FCHP)

10:15 – 11:15 a.m.         The Power of Plants (S1)
Dr. Svoboda (Bodie) V. Pennisi, University of Georgia, Griffin, GA

Recent research has placed indoor plants back in the spotlight as indoor air purifiers. The Green Industry offers unique products that hold the key to reducing carbon footprints and will ultimately create a more sustainable and healthy lifestyle.  Dr. Bodie Pennisi, lead researcher in Project Carbon, will share research results of her studies, what plants are shown to be more or less effective and how this research provide supporting data to substantiate the argument for using indoor plants as part of sustainable certification programs such as LEED.

11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Growing Trends for Green Walls - Inside and Out (S2)

From new construction to installation and maintenance, green roofs are certainly growing in popularity and quickly becoming a niche market for the green industry. Green Walls have become a new wave in marketing trends and big businesses are now recognizing the visual potential plants have to attract attention and send a positive message.

Jam-packed with a wealth of information and networking opportunities, this roundtable format will allow attendees to network and exchange ideas on a wide range of current industry issues. The best way to solve a problem, inspire a new concept or start an industry trend is to exchange thoughts with your peers. Each table will have a facilitator to help kickoff the discussion. Be sure to bring your business cards and don’t miss this meaningful networking opportunity with industry colleagues. The roundtable session is free to all show attendees, but in order to properly plan for your participation, all attendees must pre-register for this session.

9:45 – 11:45 a.m.           Online Marketing for Today’s Business Market (S4)
Andrew Palmer, Plants Nouveau/Cabot Heritage Corporation, Salem, MA

In this session, attendees will be introduced to various online marketing channels and learn how to  use each of the channels to drive more quality leads, increase sales, and spend your marketing dollars more efficiently. This is a great intro for anyone wondering how to market online or just wondering why their company’s site does not make the top of Google’s results.

9:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.   Plant Care Workshop (W1)
It’s a workshop jam-packed with tried-and-true remedies from those in the field every day. What better way to learn than to see what other technicians’ challenges and successes are in the trenches! This in-depth workshop will focus on general maintenance techniques, watering issues and pest control. The workshop is not part of the complete seminar registration; Separate registration is required.

8:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Green Walls Workshop (W2)
Presented by the National Foliage Foundation (NFF), Green Plants for Green Buildings (GPGB), and Florida Nursery, Growers & Landscape Association (FNGLA).

As the trend for green walls increases, the need to know how to properly incorporate in them into new or existing designs is critical.  This workshop presents concrete, how-to information on the design, construction and installation of living green walls, using live plants as a key component.  This session includes practical design information as well as the very latest research information on how live plants remove harmful VOC's from the indoor environment. Come find out how live plants can be incorporated into indoor environment to improve the Environmental Quality, productivity, health and well-being of building occupants. APPROVED FOR 4 LEED CREDITS
