It can take two to three years from the time I decide new scientists are needed to focus on a Florida challenge to the time I can actually make them employees of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

That’s why UF/IFAS got started years ago expanding our expertise in water. It’s always been essential to our day-to-day lives, of course. In 2016, there was increased public focus on how critical it is to our future.

• A survey of Floridians by the UF/IFAS Center for Public Issues Education found that more than 4 in 5 Floridians identified water as a highly or extremely important issue. Water ranked even higher than the economy.

• The Water 2070 report concludes that without major efforts in conservation and compact development, we cannot support the agricultural productivity and population increases projected in the next 50 years.

• The state legislature made water legislation the first item on its 2016 agenda. Regardless of the merits or faults of that the approved law, it marked water as one of the state’s most prominent political issues.

And in 2016, UF/IFAS hired numerous water experts to make sure our response to the water challenge is guided by science.

• We hired five regional specialized water Extension agents, who will work with state agencies to devise and communicate ways to protect the quality and quantity of our supply.

• Our new state-funded faculty hires include experts such as Jorge Barrera, who will analyze large data sets from water utilities, urban water engineer Eban Bean, and geospatial analysis expert Basil Iannone.

You can meet Barrera, Bean, and some of the new Extension specialists at the 2017 Urban Landscape Summit on campus in Gainesville on March 16 & 17.

It’s the second annual summit, organized by Michael Dukes of the Center for Landscape Conservation and Ecology. It brings many of our water experts together from across the state for discussions of irrigation, fertilizer bans, water-saving smartphone apps, consumer perceptions, reducing algal blooms, and more, all underpinned by an ethos of conservation.

Register for the summit. The summit is yet another example of how UF/IFAS continues to establish itself as the state’s leader in water science.

Water is an issue so fraught with politics that good policy has to rely on neutral brokers of information. Public land-grant universities such as UF are positioned to serve in this role because we seek discovery, not profit. Our comprehensive expertise also enables us to assemble scientists from a wide variety of fields to focus on a single problem.

The summit won’t be a water-only affair, but water will flow through much of the agenda. It will also be a debut of sorts for our expanding water brain trust. Of course, Dukes and our other established leaders in conservation will participate in the summit as well.

I’m proud that Dukes has invited me to open the summit. It gives me the opportunity to reemphasize the UF/IFAS commitment to conservation. It will also be an opportunity to talk about what Water 2070 recommends – more support for Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ to alter Florida’s unsustainable and growing course for thirst.

Jack Payne, senior vice president for
agriculture and natural resources,
University of Florida.

Dr. Heqiang “Alfred” Huo is a new breed of plant breeder who will soon join the accomplished team at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.

He’s among the select few who will be using the revolutionary technology known as CRISPR and applying it to lilies and orchids. The biotechnology could be a shortcut to creating the new varieties of plants that your industry depends upon.

UF/IFAS already ranks among the top three land-grant universities nationally in numbers of plant breeders, cultivars developed, and cultivars licensed for commercial propagation. Royalties from these new cultivars are six times what they were less than a decade ago, and we reinvest much of it into innovation to address your challenges.

Now we’re getting even stronger. Just in time, too, because we need a new generation of ornamentals, fruits, vegetables, and trees. Our plants face stresses that weren’t as evident 30 years ago – increased heat, sea-level rise that can lead to saltwater intrusion, migrating diseases, and a new pest arriving in Florida every month on average.

You can fight all this with more water, more nutrients, and more pesticides, all of which mean more money. But IFAS aims to save you money, time, energy,
and environmental impact by breeding plants that stand up to these stresses.

Thanks in part to the tremendous support we’ve received from FNGLA and its members, UF/IFAS has received funding to hire dozens of new research faculty. Instead of carving up this cluster of new scientists by giving each academic department a quota, we’re hiring them in teams assigned to chase a big idea.

One of those big ideas is to take UF to the next level in tropical and subtropical plant breeding. In addition to bringing Huo to our Mid-Florida Research and Education Center in Apopka, we’ve brought on new talent in Homestead, Balm, and other locations. They’ll bring even more cutting-edge science to improving the plants that Florida producers already grow and to creating Florida versions of plants traditionally grown elsewhere.

Huo moved to the U.S. from Hong Kong and is currently finishing up work at the Seed Biotechnology Center at the University of California, Davis. He brings with him a working knowledge of CRISRR, a gene-editing technique that since its invention in 2012 has been applied to animal health, medicine, engineering new antimicrobials, controlling disease-carrying insects, and, at UF/IFAS, crop breeding.

CRISPR allows scientists to essentially trick a plant into sending itself instructions to snip out gene sequences that welcome disease into its cells, for example. And because it doesn’t involve inserting genes from other species, its creations are non-GMO, which could make them much more acceptable to consumers who are still wary of biotechnology.

Part of what sold Huo on UF/IFAS was the emphasis that our plant pathology chairwoman, Rosemary Loria, put on making scientists available to growers.

Huo says that connection to industry helps guide breeders like himself to generate varieties with specific goals. In other words, they help him form the question that his research will answer. This, combined with industry support for UF/IFAS breeding efforts, made this what Huo called “my dream place for my future research career.”

May his dreams, and yours, come true.

The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences is sending an inter-departmental team of scientists to Cuba as part of a grant believed to be the first federally-funded project for scientific field research in Cuba.

The project’s principal investigator (PI), associate professor Damian Adams; project co-PIs assistant professor Jiri Hulcr and postdoctoral associates Paloma Carton de Grammont and José Soto, and other UF/IFAS research scientists and graduate students from the School of Forest Resources & Conservation, the Entomology and Nematology Department, the Food and Resource Economics Department, and the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering will travel to Cuba for this research, funded by a $228,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The project team is traveling to Cuba to fulfill several missions:

Conduct research to identify wood-boring pest species in Cuba which could pose high-risk threats to U.S. agriculture and forests.

Train Cuban scientists on state-of-the-art methods to accurately identify these wood-boring pests in Cuba in an effort to reduce the possibility of transmission of these pests to Florida agriculture and forests.

Understand how Cuba’s plant protection programs and policies impact pest movement, particularly to the United States.

Estimate the potential economic impact of a pest invasion from Cuba to the United States

The National Foliage Foundation’s (NFF) scholarship programs continue to establish pathways for qualified students in need of financial support to gain experience and expertise, earn post high school degrees and become active members and leaders in the horticulture industry or related segments such are landscape professionals, arborists, landscape architecture, research.

NFF has been helping to train future leaders of the industry since 1996. Steadfast, one of its primary focuses is to supports educational programs and provide scholarships to attract young people to the nursery and landscape industry so they become a part of the solution to future industry challenges.

Within NFF, there are two scholarship funds that have been established; James H. Davis Memorial Scholarship and NFF’s General Scholarship fund.

James H. Davis Memorial Scholarship was started by a generous contribution to the National Foliage Foundation. As an FNGLA member, he actively served his association through committee and trade show activities and dedication to his industry. Davis Tree Farm was a recipient of the prestigious FNGLA Grower of the Year award. It is hoped the James H. Davis Memorial Scholarship gives students the opportunity to develop into a new generation of dedicated individuals for the horticulture industry of tomorrow. James H. Davis was not a straight "A" student and believed as long as the students maintained a 2.0 grade point average, then he/she deserved an opportunity to gain a good education. This scholarship is for incoming freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors planning to attend a community college, college, university or other program in Florida.

NFF’s General Scholarship Fund was created to allow graduate students, out-of-state and non-traditional students the opportunity to apply for a scholarship. Contributions from those individuals whose earmarked contributions go to scholarships to strengthen this fund.

Over the past year, Florida's Division of Plant Industry (DPI) has received hundreds of "Notice of Rejections" involving Florida nursery stock shipped to several California counties. The following is specific information taken from the past years' notices:

*       Top three counties most often issuing rejections include San Diego, Alameda and Santa Barbara counties.

*       The majority of these notices list "destruction of product" with the remainder being returned to shipper or authorized treatment

*       Snails, ants, and scales are the most common reasons for rejections

To avoid rejections of nursery stock, DPI suggests you inspect all plants prior to loading and take the necessary actions if pest issues exist to ensure they are free of all plant pests.

DPI also strongly advises that you consider the necessity as well as possible consequences of shipping nursery stock into San Diego County until a more reasonable rejection policy is implemented.  DPI is in communication with the county and is trying to resolve this issue.

If you have any questions about shipping into California, please feel free to contact Mr. Bryan Benson at (352) 372- 3505 ext. 162 or Mr. Tyson Emery at ext. 154.
